After the last Project 7X album, I was looking for a way of perpetuating the concept of the mythical 1970s band called The Taglines. A while back, I had purchased a product called MyCowriter. This was a collection of pre-produced music suitable for adding your own vocals or other solo instruments. The company that produced this product released the rights of the music so that the resulting production would be your own. Here’s what I figured we could do for the next album.
I would write lyrics and the vocals for these MyCowriter songs. Then the band would use these songs as a starting point for developing our new collection of original material. So I went about writing lyrics and recording vocals to be used as demos for the band.
The story of The Taglines would be perpetuated in this way. After the release of our first 2011 Taglines CD, supposedly, we were contacted by one of the surviving members of the original Taglines band – Roland Westmore, who was the drummer. He proceeds to let us know that there were additional demos for songs that they never had a chance to record. And because of our respectful tribute to his band, Roland Westmore was going to supply us with those demos so that Project 7X could produce updated remake versions.
First I needed to create these “fake” demos, so I worked with my friend Jimmy Lyon to produce the tracks – complete with tape hiss and bad fidelity. I even produced a spoken introduction that would be used on the album to explain the concept and how we received the original Taglines demos.
We worked on these songs for a while and then this project lost traction. Still, I think it contains some very interesting material, so I have included it in my catalog. The following tracks are both the Jimmy Lyon versions as well as the MyCowriter tracks with my vocals.
An additional note here, I was just entering my early fifties at this time, and it’s interesting now to see how the context of the lyrics aligned with my experiences and view of the world at that time.
